Human Development I & II: The First 18 Months of Life
This certificate program is designed to meet the prerequisite requirements for CIMHD's Certificate in Infant Mental Health Program but is open to anyone wishing to take it. Participants are expected to observe a mother and infant through the infant's first birthday for 45-50 minutes per week. Students will be expected to write a weekly narrative of their observations and be prepared to discuss these observations in the weekly consult discussions.
Participants will learn to identify secure and insecure attachment patterns in mothers and infants as well as be able to identify the components of reflective thinking in their observed mothers and note how this capacity in the mother enhances intentionality in the infant.
Classes will start Fall Quarter and generally follow the University of Washington's academic calendar. No classes will be held in August. Each class is 90 minutes, excluding the observation time. In addition, there will be a monthly 90 minute didactic meeting. Students are expected to attend class for all four quarters.
