Provide Housing
Children below the age of 6 are the fastest growing portion of the homeless population in our community. For reasons such as domestic violence, a job loss, or an unexpected illness as many as 2,700 children and their families in King County are sleeping in cars, on friends or relatives couches, or in temporary shelters.
At Family Services, we're committed to preventing and ending homelessness for families by offering housing solutions, and access to resources such as child care, counseling, parenting support, case management, and children's supplies. Our work is made possible through a vast network of service partners and collaborative solutions that enable us to end homelessness - one family at a time.
If you are a landlord or property owner you, too, can help.
Family Services is looking for rental housing partners to help us to increase the number of housing options available for the hundreds of families and individuals we work with every year.
What to expect
Households in our program are fully supported by a team of social workers and housing staff who work with both the families and property managers/owners. Rent is often paid through housing subsidies or agency funding sources with an emphasis on financial planning to allow families to become self-sufficient.
Common Barriers to housing
Families who come to us for help have often tried to secure rental housing, but are denied for reasons such as:
- Eviction history
- Poor credit
- Criminal record
We work together with families to improve their housing opportunities by creating financial plans to eliminate outstanding debt with landlords or creditors, ensuring compliance with the courts, and accessing public benefits for assistance. We do not work with clients who have felony assaults or robberies, nor recent felony drug convictions.
Our overall approach with families is in-depth and therapeutic in order to reach the root cause issues that are preventing families in our community from achieving health, stability and self-sufficiency.
The Results
Since 2002 we have successfully placed more than 600 families and individuals in long-term housing across King County. However, we know the need in our community is much greater, and for this reason we need to do more.
